In Cranio-Sacral treatment, the therapist seeks to identify areas of restrictions, compressions or tensions throughout the body that may prevent proper functioning of organs, muscles, nerves, blood circulation and body tissues in general. These restrictions may be the result of damage, infection, inflammation, emotional tension or disease, or may also be caused by compressions that occurred during the birth process. The practitioner’s treatment consists of placing his hands gently on the body, identifying areas of restriction or tension, and following even the smallest pulsations and movements that occur in the Cranio-Sacral system until resistance points are released, facilitating the return of the tissues to balance, helping to re-establish function in the affected areas of the body. All these structures pulse with a symmetrical, balanced and rhythmic movement (called cranial rhythm) that is reflected externally via the fascial, i.e. connective structures, to all parts of the body.

This connection is useful, through a process of bi-directional interaction, to diagnose dysfunctions and re-establish a functional balance; dysfunctions are reflected from the tissues to the Cranio-Sacral system and corrective forces from the system are reflected in the affected areas. Restrictions, blockages or dysfunctions of any kind and in any part of the body are reflected as disturbances in the rhythm and symmetry of the cranio-sacral system, or as abnormal pulsations and tensions within the body tissues. These can be identified, traced at source and diagnosed by the cranio-sacral practitioner.
